The Region will not take most of it at the curb, and it will not fit in the car. That is what this page is for.
The single most common junk call in Kitchener is one piece of furniture or one appliance that has to leave and has no way to. A sofa that was replaced last weekend and is now sitting in the garage. A mattress that the new one was delivered on top of. A fridge in the basement that died in the summer and has been quietly smelling since. A dresser that the kids did not want. It is not a cleanout. It is one trip, one crew, and the price for it is small and given on the phone.
Why the curb does not work for this
The Region of Waterloo runs Kitchener's collection, and large items are covered by limited bulky item rules that decide what qualifies and how often. Mattresses and box springs, appliances with refrigerant, and electronics are handled separately or need a drop-off. The rules are on the Region of Waterloo site and change from time to time. The practical result is that a couch left at the curb in Forest Heights often sits there for a week and then gets a notice, and a fridge left out in the East Ward gets a sticker, not a pickup.
Furniture
Couches, sectionals, recliners, dining sets, bed frames, dressers, desks, bookcases, entertainment units, mattresses and box springs. Anything that was assembled inside a room may have to be taken apart to leave it, and the crew brings tools for that. In the century homes around Victoria Park and Cedar Hill the stairs turn and the doorways are narrow, so a sofa that came in through a window in 1985 may have to go out in pieces. In the newer townhouses in Huron Park the tight part is the front hall. The crew pads the corners and the railing either way.
Furniture in good condition is offered for donation first where a charity in the Region will accept it. Not everything qualifies — upholstered pieces with damage and anything with bed bugs go straight to disposal — and the crew will tell you which it is.
Appliances
Fridges, freezers, stoves, dishwashers, washers, dryers, over-the-range microwaves, window and portable air conditioners, dehumidifiers. Two things matter here. First, anything with refrigerant — fridges, freezers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers — has to have that refrigerant recovered by someone certified to do it before the appliance is scrapped, which is an Ontario rule, and the crew delivers those units to a facility that does it rather than dumping them. Second, the appliance has to be disconnected. A washer's hoses and a dishwasher's supply and drain the crew can disconnect. A gas stove or gas dryer has to be disconnected and capped by a licensed gas technician before the crew arrives, and that is not something to improvise.
Scrap metal from appliances is diverted to a scrap yard rather than the landfill, which is why an appliance pickup is often priced below a furniture pickup of the same size.
Condos and apartments downtown
Along King, Victoria, the ION stops and the Innovation District, a single-item pickup is mostly logistics. Book the service elevator for a window, tell the concierge a crew is coming, and let us know where the truck can stand for twenty minutes. Some buildings require mattresses to be bagged before they enter the hallway; the crew carries bags. The crew has been in enough Kitchener buildings to ask the right questions when you book.
Student move-outs
At the end of April and the end of August, the apartments near Conestoga College's Doon campus, the walk-ups off King, and the student houses toward the Waterloo line all empty at once. A mattress, a desk, a futon and a mini-fridge per bedroom, times four bedrooms. Landlords book a pickup for the day after the lease ends so the unit is clear for the next tenants; tenants sometimes split the cost among the house. Those dates fill early, so book once you know the lease end.
Bulk furniture from a whole room
A furnished rental being converted, an office in a house being closed, a rec room being emptied before a renovation. When it is more than a few pieces it is priced by truck volume rather than per item, which is usually the better deal. Send photos and the number comes back the same day.

Can you take a fridge or freezer?
Yes. It is emptied and unplugged before the crew arrives, and it goes to a facility that recovers the refrigerant before scrapping, which is required in Ontario. Refrigerant appliances carry a small disposal fee that is included in the price you are given.
Do you take mattresses?
Yes, and they are the item the curb rules deal with least well. Mattresses and box springs go for recycling or disposal depending on what the Region accepts at the time. In condo buildings the crew bags them before they go through the hallway.
Will you take it apart if it does not fit through the door?
Yes. The crew brings tools and takes apart sectionals, bed frames, desks and wall units that will not fit the stairs or the door in one piece. That is included, not an extra.
